For our fourth artist profile I connected with Zach Berkowitz, a DJ and Producer based out of Millburn, New Jersey who goes by 622chaos. A relatively new DJ starting about a year ago, 622chaos comes with a 7 year background in music production. Describing themselves as someone who likes to spin fast, groovy club music at or above 150 bpm, their style is an eclectic blend of Techno, Acid, Jersey Club, and Footwork which, keeps things fun, goofy, and somewhat weird.

622chaos graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken in 2023 where he majored in Music and Technology. Along with mixing at a handful of events hosted at SIT, during the last year he also played for Groove on Grove in Jersey City as well as at Whiskey and Virtue in Morristown. His focus in 2024 is on producing music and making remixes of songs not intended as dance music or for nightclubs. He states that, “it's a lot of fun to take random songs from artists like Yung Lean or Elliot Smith that no one would expect to work in a high bpm club setting and give them a jersey club reworking.” For him both DJing and production is a chance to bring something unexpected to the table.

As much as music is an outlet for expressing himself in fun and lighthearted ways, 622Chaos says he is also passionate about approaching music as means for activism. A vegan of 7 years, he spoke about his passion for animal rights. He eventually hopes to start a record label where all proceeds go towards animal sanctuaries. He imagines the label as releasing quarterly VA compilations with other musicians and DJs involved in animal rights activism. These ideas are an extension of what he describes as his extroversion and desire for community.

It was a sense of community and the ability to share in collective experiences that drew him into dancing and club music, describing these moments of unity on the dancefloor as profoundly healing and uplifting. Having been in recovery for the past two years, these aspects of club life have become fundamental for him. He wants to attest to the fact that there are sober DJs involved in nightlife who are involved out of a genuine passion for music and human connection in an effort to dispel the notion that you need to be fucked up in order to enjoy dance music. For him, all that is needed is a good pair of earplugs and maybe a mate.

622chaos’ mix marks the 37th episode for Flow Radio One. An eclectic blend of fast, stripped back Techno, Jersey Club, deep Footwork cuts, and Acid, it makes for a fun and lively hour which doesn’t miss a beat. His style is marked by fast mixing, a diverse selection, and the ability to shift energy smoothly and in a way which maintains a cohesive feel.
